Aerosmith reunite with Run DMC for 2020 Grammys performance

Aerosmith reunited with Run-D.M.C. at the 2020 Grammys tonight (January 26) but their drummer Joey Kramer was not present.

The musician had asked a judge to rule that he should be allowed to rejoin the rock band for their performance at the awards ceremony.

However, the courts decided since Kramer had not played with the band since 2019 because of an injury, it was not unfair of his bandmates to ask him not to take part.

Aerosmith were given the MusiCares Person Of The Year award at this year’s Grammys and played songs from their back catalogue during their performance. They opened with ‘Living On The Edge’ before bringing out Run-D.M.C. for their 1986 collaboration ‘Walk This Way’.

Watch footage of Aerosmith’s performance below.

Last week, Kramer was turned away from the space that Aerosmith were rehearsing in by security. He flew to Los Angeles after he claimed he was sent the group’s full rehearsal schedule. But when he showed up at the practice space, two security guards barred him from entering.

In video footage, the drummer was seen approaching the door only to be told he couldn’t enter. “I’m sorry, we’re just asking you not to come into the property right now,” one security guard told him. “We’ve been hired by the other four members of the band to ask that you don’t come in today.”

Elsewhere at the ceremony, Billie Eilish took a clean sweep of the Big Four awards of the night – Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, and Best New Artist.

The pop star also gave her debut performance at the Grammys, delivering a piano-led version of ‘When The Party’s Over’ on which she was accompanied by her brother and collaborator Finneas.

Quotable Lyrics

I had a day, I had a vision
This was the day I was supposed to be living
Instead of worrying 'bout the temporary things
I hate not knowing where it's gonna take me

FKA Twigs says she wasn’t asked to sing during Prince tribute at 2020 Grammys

FKA Twigs has said she wasn’t asked to sing during the Prince tribute at the 2020 Grammys tonight (January 26).

The musician took part in a segment that honoured the late musician and also featured Usher and Sheila E. However, some viewers were confused about why Twigs was just dancing and not singing during the performance.

On Twitter after the ceremony ended, Twigs explained the situation saying: “of course i wanted to sing at the grammys. i wasn’t asked this time but hopefully in the future. none the less what an honour. congratulations to all winners x.”

However, Sheila E told USA Today that Twigs was supposed to sing in the performance but had said she would rather dance after undertaking some rehearsals. “She didn’t want to sing,” she said. “First she wanted to, but then she didn’t want to when we ran through it because she didn’t have a [microphone] pack and [in-ear monitors], so she couldn’t hear. And she would rather have danced – which is what we asked her as well. She chose not to, she said ‘No, I’m OK.’ “

During the tribute, Usher, Sheila E and Twigs performed versions of Prince’s ‘Little Red Corvette’, ‘Kiss’, and ‘When Doves Cry’. The performance drew mixed reactions on Twitter, with some viewers unhappy with the Grammys’ choice of male performer.

“Usher this ain’t it,” tweeted one user. “Prince is rolling around in his grave.”

Another added: “a prince tribute and the person you call is usher? I guess…” See more reactions below.

George R. R. Martin Claims Books Will End Differently Than “Game Of Thrones”

It's no secret that the final season of HBO's Game Of Thrones was not exactly met with favorable reviews. In fact, quite the opposite; the vitriol surrounding it was enough to send showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss into hiding. In response, many fans turned to George R.R. Martin for salvation, a solution that comes equipped with its own set of frustrations. For one, the last book in the series was published in 2011, in tandem with the show's first season. It's been nearly a decade now, and sixth installment Winds Of Winter is nowhere to be found -- and yet hope still remains.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Speaking with a German newspaper, Martin provided an interesting update on the future of his A Song Of Ice And Fire series. According to the translations of Page Six, Martin teased that “People know an ending — but not the ending." A declaration that suggests his own vision will deviate from that of Benioff and Weiss' series, which found (SPOILERS) King Bran sitting atop the Iron Throne after Danaerys Targaryen's murder at Jon Snow's hands.

Of course, you can bet it would be tempting for George to flip the script and further bamboozle his loyal readers, especially now that enough dust has settled since The Iron Throne first aired. Yet it's reached the point where simply releasing the book would be bamboozlement in itself. Are you still invested in the epic fantasy saga?

22Gz Proves He’s The Brooklyn Drill General In Funk Flex Freestyle

Flatbush, N.Y., native 22Gz, a pioneer of the exploding Brooklyn drill scene, displayed his uncanny lyricism with some rapid fire word plays on a recent Funkmaster Flex freestyle show on New York’s Hot 97 radio station. The 22-year-old rapper, who beat a 2017 charge of murder in Miami, started out by rapping over fellow Brooklyn star Fivio Foreign’s viral “Big Drip” beat. His freestyle dripped with references of Brooklyn landmarks like Ebbets Field, the one-time home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Marcus Garvey housing projects, and the Barclays Center -- proof that Brooklyn runs deep in his veins. While still keeping up with the drill vibe, he then launched some tongue-rolling rhymes about the Patriots and Aaron Hernandez, the former football star who was convicted and sentenced to life for murder. “Throwing Bullets like the Patriots but what I'm airing(Aaron) makes me wanna hang it up.”

22Gz -- or “the Brooklyn drill general,” as he called himself on air, a nod to his OG-ness -- broke on the New York scene in 2017 when he dropped his hit song, “Suburban.” It was one of the earliest Brooklyn drill beats that soon impressed music fans and industry professionals, and his sound even caught the attention of hip-hop front-runner Kodak Black. In 2018 Kodak Black signed 22Gz to his label, Sniper Gang Records, an independent label that operates under the Atlantic Records umbrella. Kodak Black is currently sitting on a 46-month prison sentence, but 22Gz is keeping the label alive by dropping new tracks such as “Sniper Gang Freestyle” and “Suburban Pt. 2.”

While freestyling on Hot 97, Funk Flex’s scrunched up facial expressions and constant looks around the room, showed that he was clearly feeling 22’s rhythm. It is exciting to see this growing trend of drill rap emerge from Brooklyn with new artists like Pop Smoke and Fivio Foreign. But let’s not forget about the “general” and the others like Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow who helped put Brooklyn drill on the map.

Tyler, The Creator Calls Out The GRAMMYs’ Treatment Of Black Artists

Tyler, The Creator took home his very first GRAMMY today at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards, some 10 years and five albums into his career.

The award was for Best Rap Album, but Tyler took issue with the racial bias the Recording Academy places on Black artists, with particular attention to the use of the word ‘urban’.

In the GRAMMYs press room, Tyler said that, while very gracious and grateful for it, the award feels like a “back-handed compliment”.

“I’m very grateful that what I made could just be acknowledged in a world like this, but also it sucks that whenever we — and I mean guys that look like me — do anything that’s genre-bending, or anything, they always put it in a rap or urban category,” he said.

“I don’t like that urban word, it’s just a politically correct way to say the N-word to me. When I hear that, I’m just like, why can’t we just be in pop? Half of me feels like the rap nomination was a backhanded compliment.”

This comes in the wake of huge controversy for the Recording Academy at the moment, as recently ousted CEO Deborah Dugan filed a formal complaint and accused the academy of racial and gender bias.

You can check out Tyler’s response below, and the full list of winners here.

Lil Nas X & Nas Premiere “Rodeo” Remix At Grammys

Sunday night was a big night for Lil Nas X. The Gerogia-bred breakout star landed two total Grammy wins, walking away with Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video for his "Old Town Road."

He would take to the stage to perform the track and its many remixed versions alongside the likes of Billy Ray Cyrus, BTS, Diplo, and Mason Ramsey. The most surprising link-up, however, was when Lil Nas X connected with the Orignal as Nasir Jones graced the stage to lend his vocals in a live remix of Lil Nas' "Rodeo" track.

The cut originally featured Cardi b when it appeared on Lil Nas X's debut 7 project and as he and Nas performed the cut live, the new track concurrently dropped for our listening pleasure.

"It feels amazing to have a track with Nas, and for Nas to acknowledge me," Lil Nas X said ahead of the release. "This is the last thing I would have expected to be doing."

Enjoy the Redoe remix below

I might Milly Rock to get up off it

Tyler, the Creator criticises Grammy categories after winning Best Rap Album

Tyler, the Creator has won his first ever Grammy for his 2019 LP, Igor.

Despite being a multi-faceted work of funk, neo-soul, R&B and hip hop, Igor was nominated in the Best Rap Album category. There is rapping on the album, but Tyler’s soul and R&B melodies are its central focus.

Although visibly thrilled to receive his first Grammy, Tyler expressed reservations about the particular award he was given.

“I am very grateful that what I made can be acknowledged in a world like this… but it sucks that whenever we – and I mean guys that look like me – do anything that’s genre-bending or anything they always put it in a rap or urban category,” he said in a post-awards press conference.

Drake offered similar criticisms after ‘Hotline Bling’ won Best Rap Song in 2017.

“I’m apparently a rapper, even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song. The only category they can manage to fit me in is in a rap category, maybe because I’ve rapped in the past or because I’m black,” he said on Apple’s OVO Sound radio show.

“I feel almost alienated, or [like they’re] trying to purposely alienate me by making me win rap awards or pacify me by handing me something and putting me in that category because it’s the only place where you can figure out where to put me.”

Tyler precisely echoed these remarks in his post-Grammys interview. “I don’t like that ‘urban’ word,” he said. “It’s just a politically correct way to say the N-word, to me. So when I hear that, I’m just like, ‘why can’t we just be in pop?’ So I felt like… half of me feels like the rap nomination was a backhanded compliment.”

Igor won the award other Meek Mill (Championships), 21 Savage (i am > i was), YBN Cordae (The Lost Boy), and Dreamville (Revenge of The Dreamers III). The musician’s mum came up onstage with him to accept the award. Tyler also performed at the ceremony.

Ozzy Osbourne had quite the night at the night at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. After walking the red carpet with his daughter, Kelly, Osbourne presented the award for Best Rap / Sung Performance Award to DJ Khaled with his wife Sharon.

Once Khaled accepted the award Ozzy and Sharon stuck around to introduce a performance by H.E.R.

During his red carpet interview, The Prince of Darkness said that he will tour if he’s “well enough” and that he sees a physical therapist five times a week. “I’m doing the best I can,” he said.

This all comes after Ozzy revealed that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in an interview on Good Morning America.

The legendary metal musician’s new album Ordinary Man is due out next month, and the “Prince of Darkness” recently mounted an impressive comeback with “Under the Graveyard.”

DJ Khaled with the Upset… Wins GRAMMY for “Higher” featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend – Shout out to Meek Mill, YG and Roddy Rich for Jumping on Tribute

When DJ Khaled dropped his album Father of Ahsad featuring the now GRAMMY award-winning “Higher” less than two months after Nipsey Hussle died it was just eerie.

The words were drenched with prophetic power and urgency, while also saturated in Holy Spirit comfort. It was needed because as a community we were hurting.

And so, for it to win the Best Rap/ Sung Performance at the 2020 GRAMMYs, beating out songs that have banged in our ears over and over again, is a testament to the love for the fallen rap star- and the producing anointing that DJ Khaled has over his life.

So let’s deal with said anointing.

DJ Khaled projects nothing but positivity through his music and on every project that he puts his hands on and while he may not be a preacher, this Holy man holds the pulpit with the way he curates energy to promote prosperity and kindness.

We the Best, because HE’S THE BEST.

And The Recording Academy (with all of their current problems) got it right with this one. We hoped they would get it right, especially after that star-studded and emotional performance rendered earlier in the night including Philly’s Meek Mill, Compton rappers Roddy Ricch and YG, John Legend and Kirk Franklin.

It was good to see YG, being he was arrested just a few days ago.

At the end of the performance was a scene of both Nipsey Hussle and Kobe Bryant side by side.

Another touching moment was done earlier in the day, Nipsey won Best Rap Performance for “Racks in the Middle.” That was a touching moment, though not televised. Adding this one and the Khaled honor, his family will bring home two trophies in celebration to their beloved.
